A: The Design Council Abu Dhabi (DCAD) is committed to enhancing Abu Dhabi’s creative economy by fostering cross-cultural dialogue in design. Under the chairwomanship of Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa Bint Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, DCAD’s mission is to cultivate a vibrant design culture in Abu Dhabi. We empower emerging designers and promote innovation by advocating for a dynamic design culture within the UAE. Our efforts support creative collaboration and encourage sustainable and socially responsible design practices. Through cultural exchanges and global dialogue, DCAD provides a platform for local talent to showcase their work, drive innovative solutions, and gain international exposure.

About the DCAD Pottery & Ceramics  Residency Program (Ginori 1735)

Q: What is the Residency Program?

A: It is DCAD’s second design residency cycle, created in cultural partnership with Italian porcelain brand Ginori 1735. This non-commercial initiative includes education, craft development, and cultural exchange through a Ginori 1735-led masterclass and a post-program residency opportunity in Florence.

Q: Who is Ginori 1735?

A: Founded in 1896 in Sesto Fiorentino, Italy, Ginori 1735 is a global leader in luxury porcelain design. Their partnership with DCAD highlights Abu Dhabi’s growing position in global design dialogue.

Q: What makes this program unique?

A: A featured design masterclass will be led by Ginori 1735’s team, with select participants eligible for an international residency.

Q: Is this program accredited?

A: No. While DCAD partners with academic and cultural institutions, the certification is issued directly by DCAD.

 

Q: Will there be an exhibition?

A: Yes. The final collection will be exhibited at Bassam Freiha Art Foundation (BFAF) in June 2026.

Q: What do residents gain from the experience?

A:

- Curriculum developed by DCAD in partnership with Ginori 1735

- Masterclass by Ginori 1735's Creative Director (on-site in Abu Dhabi)

- Studio practice in Abu Dhabi with a potential internship opportunity in Florence

- Inclusion in a public exhibition and media campaign

 

Q: Will there be internships?

A: Yes. Top-performing residents may qualify for a short-term internship opportunity in Florence, Italy, at Ginori 1735 HQ (tentatively Q4 2026).

Eligibility and Application

Q: Who can apply?

A: The program is open to female and male UAE Nationals & Residents (21+) who:

- Hold a relevant degree (design, pottery, ceramics, arts, or related field)

- Have a strong creative portfolio and technical experience in ceramics or allied crafts

- Are able to commit to weekly in-person sessions for the full 6-month duration

Q: What is the application deadline?

A: Application opens September 1, 2025 and closes October 31, 2025.

 

Q: When will the results be announced?

A: Final selection will be announced in December 2025.

Q: What is the class schedule?

A: Sessions will run weekly, 10AM-5PM at our official venue partner MAKE, as well as Abu Dhabi University and Al Ain Educational Investments (AAEI).

Funding and Support

Q: Is the program free?

A: Yes. The DCAD Pottery & Ceramics Design Residency is a fully funded program. All training, materials, and travel for approved masterclass facilitators are covered.

 

Q: Will DCAD provide accommodation?

A: No. Participants are expected to arrange their own accommodation in Abu Dhabi.
